He idolized his father and wanted to be just like him. He adores his beautiful '67 Chevy Impala. He was eager to take up the 'family business' of hunting.

Sam's life has been surrounded by demonic happenings since he was six months old. On November 2, 1983 the Yellow Eyed Demon visited his house. Sam's mother, Mary Winchester, caught the demon in the act and was murdered by him. The Yellow Eyed Demon then set their house on fire. Ever since that night Sam, Dean, and their father, John Winchester, had been on the road seeking revenge for Mary's death. Growing up Sam fought his dad. He only wanted to be normal, not a hunter. He ran away frequently eventually leaving John and Dean to go to Stanford, but once a hunter always a hunter.

Bobby has been like a father to Sam and Dean all of their lives. He was a hunting buddy of John Winchester. He began hunting because his wife, Karen Singer, was possessed by a demon and he was forced to murder her. Bobby does research for several different hunters.

He raised his sons to be hunters just like him. His sons were his life everything he did was to benefit them. It did not always seem that way, but he lived and died for his boys.
